Artist Bio

I am a director and creative producer of hybrid work based in NYC. I am currently developing 3 opera-theatre works with John Glover/Kelley Rourke, Paul Pinto and Kamala Sankaram.

I have constructed 36 works for the stage (15 original hybrid works, 9 opera-theatre and music-theatre works, 8 adaptations of novels & short stories and 5 classic plays). I work in a collaborative, process-driven way to fuse different disciplines into a cohesive whole. I have developed a unique directorial form that features a “gestural vocabulary” used both as an emotional signifier and as a choreographic element.

I have premiered works at HERE, 3LD, Ohio Theatre, and Soho Rep. My work has toured to 7 Stages, Berkshire Festival, Brown, MCA, New World, Painted Bride, Perishable, UMass, Moscow Art Theatre and Oslo. I have directed readings and workshops for Clubbed Thumb, New Georges, Playwrights Horizons, Public Theatre, Target Margin, and others. Selected residencies include Ankram Opera House, Bethany Arts Center, LMCC, Mabou Mines, Mass MOCA, NACL, Penrose, Playwrights Center, Smack Mellon, Space at Ryder Farm, Voice & Vision, Williams. I have also directed productions for Cal Arts, NYU, and Sarah Lawrence.

Reviews have appeared in all major New York media. I am the recipient of two prestigious MAP Fund awards, a nytheatre.com Person of the Decade for outstanding contribution, a Leader to Watch by Art Table and a BAX10 Award.  I am a political activist who has organized many art actions and a frequent panelist for the NEA, TCG, NYSCA, DCA, and ART/NY. I have taught Creative Producing and Directing as well as lecturing at a number of universities. I served as Co-President of the League of Professional Theatre Women. I assisted Robert Wilson on Salome and Hamletmachine and co-founded the tiny mythic theatre company. I graduated from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with honors in 1988.

I am the Founding Artistic Director of HERE, an award-winning progressive arts center in lower Manhattan where I cultivate artists and programs all events for two performance spaces–including 18 OBIE-award winners –for an annual audience of 30,000. I am also co-founding director of PROTOTYPE festival, a city-wide annual opera and music theatre festival.
